Abstract: Based on https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0177926. Automatic detection or classification of adventitious sounds is useful to assist physicians in diagnosing or monitoring diseases such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and pneumonia. This article contains a compilation of the different sounds present in breathing together with their main characteristics. In addition, it also provides a systematic review of methods used in the literature, including databases, feature extraction, and algorithms. In particular, 77 articles published between 1938 and 2016 are reviewed. Finally, the main limitations of these articles and the lines to be followed for future works are presented.
