Abstract: This talk is an overview of Spiking Neural Networks, a biologically inspired type of neural networks that outputs digital spikes over continuous time in an asynchronous way, instead of continuous values at frame-by-frame synchronous times in common Artificial Neural Networks. This type of NN is under research due to their closer operation to the biological neurons and their potential for much higher energy efficiency, in particular when combined with specially designed hardware that tries to resemble some aspects of computing in the human brain. These novel computing paradigms that try to make computing closer to biological systems are collectively known as neuromorphic computing.
